How Times are Changing!

1) What do you think is changing in America, from Archie's point of view?

Archie sees that people are beginning to be nicer to black people. Even if he doesn't come out saying he is racist by the comments he make you can still tell. He brings things up from the past such as he remembers when whites and blacks weren't allowed on the television together. Also when Sammy takes a drink from a glass and handed it to Archie, his eyes got big and he didn't know what to do with it. Times are changing and Archie is not sure how to feel about it.

2) In what ways are young people (his daughter and son-in-law in the clip) and minorities changing society for Archie?

Throughout the clip Archie's daughter and son-in-law were always correcting the things Archie said. Like when he asked Sammy to sing for him they spoke up and said he shouldn't have to for free on his day off since it was his job. They were also apologizing to Sammy for the things he said. During the clip they were sitting next to a black man on the same couch which is a big step. The younger people are much more comfortable with the change then the older people who tend to be more conservative.

3) What us changing in American Society according to the clip?

A black couple are in a taxi together and get out and walk into a hotel. The door is held open by a white man and the hotel is very nice. Many years before you would never see something like this. Times are changing.

Reagan's Legacy

Ronald Reagan could be remember in many ways. One of the good things that he did was he had a different views on things then other people. Which may have been useful because not everything is can be fixed if everyone had the same views. By having different ways he was able to change peoples views on conservatism and make goals with a small town come to a big city.
Out of the biggest things he has done it would probably be ending the Cold War. If he had not ended the Cold War in the 80's people think it would have lasted longer and ended much worse. During this time he came up with the Reagan Doctrine which helped and is still known today.
Reagan changed many things. He put in tax cuts, and talked with us about conservatism and anticommunism. By doing these things it made him popular and kept his party together. He made the United States feel good. We have had many things happen to our country but he was a role model for many. He gave our country back the self confidence that it needs and helped put us back together again!

Carter's Speech

YELLOW

What is the real threat to America is, according to Carter, and is that threat still with us today?

He explained that America has a lack of confidence and we are beginning to loose faith in our country and who is running it. Believing that our Nations resources were limitless. Then we realized we are consuming 40% more energy then we produce which equals inflation and unemployment. Yes, I do think these treats/ problems that he speaks of are still with us today. I think that they are probably worse then then before.

RED

Summarizing what Carter is saying about American society, and analzying America today against his critique.

What Carter said about our society us that people are no longer as hard working as they once were. They are much more lazy and don't care as much as the did. People no longer look at other people for what they do but for what they own. I think America today is just like he explained it.

GREEN

Comparing his plan to confront an energy crisis with President Obama's plan. How do the plans differ, and how are they alike? How do their plans real what they think the problem really is?

Carters plan was to cut back 50% of the foreign oil that they took in. The he wanted to get funds to go towards other sources of fuels like coal, oil shale, the sun. He wanted to make the Nations first solar bank which was working towards having his goal of 20% of things solar power. Obama's plans are selling crude oil to lower gas prices as a short term plan. As a long term plan he is going to allow only a limited amount of drilling. Much like Carter through Obama's plans are still to make more fuel-efficient like new cars. The problems are all centered around fuel and how more things need to become solar powered.

ASSIGNMENT:

After watching all of the YouTube clips, answer the following question on your blog: What made Clinton a talented politician? What moments do you see in his video clips that show him as talented in persuading people or articulating his point-of-view?

What I think made Clinton a talented politician was he would connect with people directly. In one video he was explaining how when people would loose their jobs, he would know the people by their name. When a factory shut down, he would know the people who owned it. When you have a one on one connection with someone, or if it feels like it, it makes me people feel better. He wouldn't talk to people like he was better and more powerful then them which helped him alot with popularity.

20% Project

Divorce

Over 50% of married Americans today will eventually get a divorce. Next to Sweden we are the country with the highest divorce rate. So the question is why are our divorce rates so much higher then other countries like India? There are multiple reasons.
The number one reason for divorce in the United States today is because of lack of commitment and communication. This is including adultery or abuse which doesn’t even make the top three reasons. That is really saying something about us as people. In India, for some people the tradition is to have your marriage arranged for you. Although divorce is harder to get there, it is still available. The divorce rate in India is only 1.1% and that is having marriages arranged for them. We get to pick who we marry and many of us still cannot make it work.
In the United States, the time where the divorce happens most is between the ages of 20-24 years old. This is also the average time that people normally get married. 60% of people who get married the second time will end up getting a divorce. 73% of people who get married the third time will also get a divorce. So, this is not just newlyweds.
Let’s look at countries like Turkey for example that are not finically well. Their divorce rate is only 6%. Many reasons for divorce deal with money. Americans are known to be lazy, and greedy. Money means a lot to people in the US and many of us want the best of the best. In Turkey, marrying someone just for their money may not be as high on the priority list. Many of us now don’t look necessarily for the right person, but instead what they have to offer to us.
Another reason could be religion. In Italy 88% of the populations are Catholics. They do not believe in premarital sex and don’t believe in divorce. Although they as well have their share of people who are not religious as do we, they are much stricter about it. Considering all of this, their divorce rate is only 10% which is more then some, but better then ours.
Those are a few of the reasons that our divorce rate may be so much higher compared to other countries. I am not saying it is impossible to change but I feel like the way we do things makes this how it is and would be hard to change. That is why over 50% of married Americans today will eventually get divorced.
